When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn- Review

When He Was Wicked is easily my favorite book by Julia Quinn, and that is really saying something because in the past couple of years, I have read around 20 of her books. I love her writing style, and her stories always seem to hit a sweet spot between plot and romance. Her male main characters are swoon worthy, understanding, and intelligent and her female main characters are strong, witty, and smart. It’s the perfect combination for a great romance, and it really comes together in When He Was Wicked.
This book follows Francesca Bridgerton, yes it is a Bridgerton book, after her husband dies and she finds herself falling for her past husband's cousin. Her and the cousin, Micheal, have always had a close relationship as friends. The book does such a great job at showing the yearning and love the characters have for each other while dealing with the guilt and conflict that comes from them both losing someone they care so much about. It also has the added issue of inheritance of a title, Micheal is set to inherit the late husband's title if there is no heir, and a great plot line of how Francesca feels othered by her siblings and family.
Francesca is a wonderfully strong main character who desires to be a mother and feel heard by her family and peers. The book also hints at her being neurodivergent and how that made her feel in Regency London and in such a large family. It was great getting to know her throughout her book and see things through her eyes, as she is a more absent character throughout her siblings' books. Overall, I highly recommend this book, as it was the easiest 5 stars I have ever given out. It is such a well written romance.
