Tips & Tricks for Surviving (and Thriving at) Book Festivals
Book festivals are a dream come true for readers—authors everywhere, panels, signings, merch, and more bookish energy than one might know what to do with. But if you want to make the most of your experience (and avoid rookie mistakes), here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned at my bookish events.
1. Get There Early
This is a big one. Some festivals have massive lines just to get in, and once inside you’ll find ever more lines, especially for major author signings or giveaways. I was shocked to see 4 hour long lines to get a signed copy, and noticed that getting to the line 20-30 mins early could shave hours off your overall wait time. Arriving early means less time waiting and more time exploring. Plus, you might snag early access perks or unannounced drops.
2. Bring Books from Home (But Be Strategic)
It’s tempting to bring your whole bookshelf, but try to keep it reasonable. Most authors will only sign a limited number of books per person, and carrying too many gets exhausting fast. Research what the signing limit will be before hand, and if a book seller will be providing books at the event, then bring your favorite books or those hardest to find. Pro tip: Put a sticky note with your name on it in the book for personalization.
3. Buying Books There? Budget + Bag Plan
If you plan on buying books at the event (and let’s be honest, you probably will), set a budget ahead of time. It’s easy to overspend in the excitement. Also: bring a tote bag or even a rolling bag if you’re planning to haul a lot. Your shoulders will thank you, and you’ll be surprised you are far from alone. I have seen people wheeling full suitcases through book events.
4. Check Social Media Often
Threads, Instagram Stories, and even TikTok are goldmines during festivals. Publishers and authors often post surprise giveaways, pop-up signings, and booth drops. Turn on notifications for your favorite publishers and authors and follow event hashtags to stay in the loop.
5. Pack Like a Pro
Book festivals can be all-day affairs, and you don’t want to be caught unprepared. Here’s a quick survival pack list:
Water bottle
Snacks
Portable charger
Bandaids (blisters happen)
Umbrella or poncho (outdoor events = unpredictable weather)
Sunscreen
Sharpie or pen for quick autographs
6. Make a Plan, But Stay Flexible
Check the schedule ahead of time and map out the authors/panels/booths you don’t want to miss. But don’t be afraid to wander or jump into something unexpected. Some of the best festival moments are spontaneous.
Book festivals are chaotic, magical, and completely worth the prep. With a little planning and a lot of excitement, you’ll have an unforgettable experience—and maybe even come home with a few surprise ARCs and signed treasures.
