Why You Should Start or Join a Book Club
If you love books but haven’t joined (or started!) a book club yet, you’re missing out! Being part of a book club—whether online, in person, or both—has been such a rewarding experience for me. I’ve made friends, stepped out of my reading comfort zone, and discovered books I never would have picked up otherwise. Whether you’re looking for a club to join or thinking about starting your own, here’s why it’s absolutely worth it:
1. Make Friends Who Love Books as Much as You Do
Reading is often a solitary activity, but sharing your thoughts with others makes it even better. A book club connects you with people who love books just as much as you do, making it easy to build friendships. I’m in both an online and an in-person book club, and I’ve met some amazing people through both!
If you can’t find a book club near you, why not start one? Chances are, other readers are looking for one too!
2. Read Outside Your Comfort Zone
We all have our go-to genres, but a book club pushes you to try something new. I’ve read books I never would have picked up on my own—some that became favorites and others that at least sparked great discussions. If you’re tired of reading the same types of books, this is a great way to mix things up.
3. Discover New Books and Authors
Book clubs introduce you to new authors and books you may not know about. It’s a great way to stay updated on new releases and revisit classics you may have overlooked. Plus, discussing a book can help you appreciate it in ways you wouldn’t on your own. Some book clubs are even able to get the author to come to the club meeting, or Zoom in.
If you start your own book club, you get to pick books that interest you and your group—whether it’s themed reads, new releases, or even rereads of old favorites!
4. Engaging Discussions and Different Perspectives
Everyone reads a book differently, and hearing others’ thoughts can make you see a story in a whole new light. Maybe you missed a key theme, or maybe someone else caught symbolism that deepened the meaning of the book. Book club discussions can be eye-opening!
5. Accountability to Keep Reading
Life gets busy, and sometimes reading takes a backseat. A book club gives you a reason to prioritize reading, helping you stay consistent with your reading goals. If you start your own club, you also get the fun of organizing discussions and keeping everyone engaged!
6. It’s Just Fun!
Beyond the books, book clubs are simply fun! Whether it’s a cozy chat over coffee, a virtual discussion with readers from around the world, or even themed book club events, it’s a great way to enjoy books while socializing.
If you’ve been considering joining a book club, do it! And if you can’t find the perfect one, why not start your own? You never know who else is looking for the same kind of reading community. Happy reading!
