Things to Do While Listening to an Audiobook

There’s something magical about audiobooks. They let you disappear into another world while still living in your own. I love curling up with a physical book, but there are plenty of times where I want to “read” and also keep my hands or body busy. That’s where audiobooks come in, they’re the ultimate multitasking tool. Whether I’m cleaning, relaxing, or doing something creative, having a narrator in my ear makes everything better.

Over time, I’ve figured out some activities that pair perfectly with audiobooks, and I thought I’d share my favorites along with a few more ideas.

My Favorites

When I throw on an audiobook these are the activities I usually gravitate toward:

  • Puzzles – There’s something so cozy about piecing together a puzzle while listening to a story unfold. It feels like double the brain workout, but in a relaxing way.

  • Drawing or Coloring – I’m not a professional artist by any means, but doodling or coloring is such a fun, low pressure way to be creative. Plus, it keeps my hands busy without distracting me from the plot.

  • Legos – Honestly, building with Legos while listening to an audiobook might be one of the most underrated combinations. It’s creative, hands-on, and just plain fun.

  • Laying down and relaxing – Sometimes the best activity is no activity at all. Closing my eyes, sinking into the couch or bed, and letting the story wash over me is such a treat.

  • Mindless video games – Mario Kart is my personal go-to. It’s just repetitive enough that I can focus on the audiobook, but still fun enough to keep me engaged.

  • Cleaning – This is probably my most practical use for audiobooks. Folding laundry, washing dishes, vacuuming, it makes the chores more enjoyable and time flies by.

More Ideas

There are so many other activities that pair beautifully with audiobooks:

  • Knitting or crocheting – If I had the skill, this would be my dream hobby.

  • Adult coloring apps – Same vibe as coloring books but without the mess. Just tap and relax.

  • Walking – Great for getting outside or moving your body while staying wrapped up in a story.

  • Cooking or baking – Audiobooks make meal prep and baking sessions feel less like work and more like fun.

  • Gardening – If you’ve got outdoor space, pairing a peaceful hobby like gardening with an audiobook sounds like perfection.

  • Crafts – Things like diamond painting, scrapbooking, or any kind of repetitive craft work go well with listening.

The best part about audiobooks is how flexible they are. They fit into busy days, cozy evenings, and everything in between. Whether you’re being productive, creative, or just trying to unwind, an audiobook makes it all better.
